About Love Bites:

Can a woman really be replaced by two TVs?

Many of us come to the same conclusion when a relationship ends – love bites! Most of us crawl into a cave and lick our wounds for 6 months to a year.

Instead, Alex Hickey healed her broken heart by jumpstarting her creativity; the result is love bites, her debut CD. Filled with bad endings, new beginnings, grudges, laughter, longing and loss, love bites is everything a break up album should be.

“Our love is my favourite lazarus,
but even jesus couldn’t breath life into this”

Not only are the lyrics intelligently written with just the right amount of biting humour, but Alex also brings a crystal-clear, beautiful voice that is reminiscent of Dolly Parton, the McGarrigle sisters and Janis Joplin all rolled into one. An intriguing mix of roots, country, and blues, Alex’s music is at times catchy, foot-stomping, evil fun and at others, melancholic and thought-provoking.

Eminently relatable, Alex takes on subjects that never go out of style, from the horrific realization that you have been replaced by two TVs to the uncrushable hope that you’ll always meet someone new going ‘round the oxbow bend.

love bites is engineered and mixed by Andrew Kilgour, a.k.a. “beatsmith extraordinaire Fresh Kils, another of Canada’s best kept secrets” (Now Magazine, June 12–19, 2008). Alex is distinctly accompanied on the CD by James Anstey on banjo.

It should be noted that not only is Alex the singer/songwriter of love bites, but she also plays guitar and designed both the cover and booklet.

Love may indeed bite, but this triumphant musical result should lessen the sting.
